Towards a framework for fishing route optimization decision support systems: Review of the state-of-the-art and challenges

Route optimization methods offer an opportunity to the fisheries industry enhance their efficiency, sustainability, and safety. However, use of route Decision Support Systems (DSS), which have been widely used in shipping industry, is limited case fisheries. In first part, this work describes fishing routing problems, reviews state-of-the-art applied introduces a general framework for decision support systems (FRODSS). second we highlight existing gap application DSS fisheries, how develop FRODSS considering different types fleets. Finally, using diverse Basque fleet as study, conclude that fleets can be summarized into four main groups whose routes could optimized similar way. This characterization based on similarities, such us target species, gear, type distance grounds. These are: (i) small-scale coastal fleet; (ii) large-scale pelagic (iii) demersal (iv) distant-water fleet. Distant-water vessels are currently more easily benefit from FRODSS, they example here. rest also through adequate adaptation operation characteristics, driven by specific gear species.
